Motorola to Set Up One of India's Largest Captive R&D Campuses in Bangalore

BANGALORE, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions, today announced its plans to setup one of India's largest captive R&D facility in Bangalore. The 280,000 square feet campus is being setup for the Motorola Global Software Group (GSG) to integrate its two existing centers in Bangalore under one roof and address its expansion plans over the next few years. The new facility will require an investment of US $ 13 million and will be ready by January 2004. The unveiling of the symbolic stone for the new campus is being done by Mr. S.M. Krishna, Chief Minister of Karnataka today.

Speaking at the occasion, Terrence Heng, Senior Vice President & GM, Motorola Global Software Group said, "Motorola prides itself on innovation which is a result of its astute focus on R&D. We were among the first telecom companies to realize India's software potential and invest in establishing a development center here. Today, the India development center is an integral part of GSG operations and is developing cutting edge solutions in software and applications for Motorola products and on future technologies such as 2.5/3G mobile handsets, and networks, consumer electronics & others."

"The flagship India centre is a pioneer amongst GSG centers across Motorola. The investment reflects Motorola's commitment to India and its confidence in the software talent available in India. The new R&D centre will continue to provide Indian developers the opportunity to work on future technologies," said Mohan Kumar, VP & GM Asia Pacific, Motorola Global Software Group.

"The new campus apart from integrating the two existing centers, provides many additional facilities to the employees. Not only employee growth but employee comfort is essential," said Soumitra Sana, MD, Motorola India Electronics Limited (MIEL).

Motorola currently has two development centres in Bangalore and one in Hyderabad. The centers produce software for Motorola's Infrastructure, subscriber and semiconductor products. Currently the centres are heavily involved with development of software solutions for CDMA-1X products, in addition to the entire range of 2G, 2.5G and 3G phones. MIEL is also involved in the development of wireless applications for both infrastructure subscriber sectors. In addition to Bluetooth & WAP, MIEL is working in such areas as WLAN, Multimedia messaging, Cable Modems and security.

Motorola's Indian software division was the first center in India to achieve SEI level 5 and the first commercial software organization in the world to do so. Its achievements include developing the Motorola's WiLL system and developing GPRS software that allowed Motorola to be first in the market with a GPRS phone.
